Leading Spanish on-site caterers Flavours of Spain have announced the “Best Spanish Paella Chef in Oceania” in a culmination of the inaugural International Spanish Paella Championships. Hassan M’Souli from the restaurant Out Of Africa in Manly, NSW won the competition last Sunday 25 May and he will compete in the 54th International Paella Valenciana Contest, held in the village of Sueca in Valencia, Spain.
“It’s a honour for me to be representing Australia in Spain in September” said Hassan. “I’ve been cooking paella all my life and I do offer it in my restaurant as I realise how much Australians like Spanish food. The opportunity I had to learn from the king of the paella Jesus Melero and cook with all these great chefs today is something I will never forget”. The second place was awarded to chef Failino Lattarulo from Simply Spanish Restaurant in Melbourne and the third place went to Alex Fry from Sah Modern Mediterranean restaurant in Adelaide. The event was organised by Flavours of Spain and supported by Home of Paella Catering, Manly Council and the Internacional Concurso de Paellas de Sueca.
The judges of the competition were Jean Hay, Major of Manly, Alvaro Iranzo Gutierrez Spanish Consul General, Cristina Casanova, Commercial Consul, Edrick Corban Banks, Jesus Melero and Miguel Sanfeliu, organisers of the Sueca contest and Miguel Cuevas, organiser of the challenge and founder of Flavours of Spain Catering in Sydney.
“The day was so exciting with so much happening in terms of Spanish food and music. On the food side these championships showed how high the standard of paella cooking is in Oceania. The difference between all the contestants was minimal. Anyone could have won” says Miguel Cuevas. “I am very confident we are going to the finals in Spain in September and we have a good chance to bring the crown to Australia for the first time” he concludes.
